Root Canal Therapy

Root Canal Therapy (RCT) is needed when the nerve(s) of a tooth are infected. This may happen as a result of trauma, or decay process which has reached the nerve chamber. Root Canal Therapy is a 2 - 3 visit course of treatment. It entails removing the debris from the canals, shaping them and placing a medicament inside the tooth to help kill bacteria and stop the infection. At the final visit the root canals are sealed to stop any bacteria from re-entering the tooth and a white, composite filling is placed on top. A crown is needed to strengthen the tooth structure, which has been weakened as a result of the infection.
